An ‘Oscar’ for the Pipe and Glass

The Pipe and Glass Inn is celebrating after winning a Catey Award – the Oscars of the restaurant industry. The Pub and Bar Award was presented to Pipe and Glass owners James and Kate Mackenzie by actor Simon Callow at a star-studded event at London’s Grosvenor House. Also present were many other leading chefs including Raymond Blanc, Tom Kerridge, Jason Atherton and Brian Turner.

Chef James Mackenzie said: “Wow – we won! We’re very proud to be bringing this award back to Yorkshire and our hard-working team at the Pipe and Glass. Everyone in the business wants to win a Catey because the winners are selected by industry insiders.”

The pub at South Dalton, near Beverley, had been shortlisted to a final two, going head to head with national café bar Loungers. The Cateys are run by hospitality industry magazine Caterer and Hotelkeeper. Award winners are nominated and selected by their industry peers via the weekly magazine.

Mark Lewis, Group Editor of Caterer and Hotelkeeper, said: “A Catey statue on your mantelpiece symbolises Caterer readers’ collective desire to recognise your efforts in supporting and developing the UK's hospitality scene."

The Pipe and Glass Inn recently took fourth position in the Budweiser Budvar Top 50 Gastropub Awards, organised by industry magazine The Publican’s Morning Advertiser. Last autumn the pub also retained its Michelin star for the fourth consecutive year and was named as the Michelin Pub of the Year for 2013.

James' debut book, On The Menu, is an autobiographical cookbook with an inspirational collection of over 70 recipes from one of the UK's brightest chefs. With a foreword by the BBC’s Nigel Barden and photography by Jason Lowe.
